The Ghosts of Old Fort Niagara Castle

In 1726, the French built the Old Fort Niagara castle. Many apparitions wander the halls and rooms of this ancient building. People have reported seeing candles lit by invisible hands, ghostly silhouettes without faces, and even the ghosts of German shepherds howling at the moon. At Fort Niagara these experiences are just normal day-to-day life.

Could the fort’s unique liveliness be due to the many battles fought on this land, or maybe it’s the result of pulsating energy off the waves of Lake Ontario beating against the shore? This all sets the mood for a dark and silent night, causing a calm that makes for a focused and eventful investigation.

The most legendary ghost of Fort Niagara is the headless soldier of the castle's famous well. He first began to frighten residents almost 300 years ago! The legend tells of a French officer who entered into a duel-to-the-death, to win the love of a local native woman during a party at the castle. He lost his footing on the spiral stairs and fell to the stone floor, giving his opponent the opportunity to run his sword through the poor man. The soldier’s head was removed and thrown into the Lake before the murderer panicked. The only option, toss the head-less corpse into the old well. On nights of a full moon his spirit roams the castle in search of his missing head.

The chapel is a hotbed of activity late at night. Sounds of heavy wood being dragged, like benches, are heard. The energy of the chapel is very negative and will cause fear among the workers set to closing up at night. During a recent Haunted Hamilton investigation, approximately 20 people were witness to a deep and grumbled whisper calling the name of one of our guests, "George" from an empty corner of the chapel!

Not many are brave enough to spend the night at Old Fort Niagara since it is on the list of one of the most haunted places in New York State.

Eerie and creepy sounds, bumps in the night, and a headless ghost make this the perfect place for a Haunted Hamilton Ghost Hunt Investigation!

1812 CEMETERY at Fort Niagara

The "1812 Cemetery" or the Military Cemetery at Old Fort Niagara, near the mouth of the Niagara River at Youngstown, NY, contains the graves of soldiers, and some civilians, who where stationed at the Fort, starting in the 18th century. The cemetery actually dates from the French and Indian War period, and received its name from the fact that the earliest known graves were of the War of 1812 period.
